Can you imagine getting $75k for something you thought was worth less than a third of that amount? That’s exactly what happened to one couple when they visited Idaho Pawn and Gold.
Every item tells a story
Pawnshops are full of unique items, and each one tells a story. This one is about a couple who received $75,000 for their jewelry when they had expected far less.
One day, an elderly couple walked into Idaho Pawn and Gold with a safety deposit box that had been left by a relative.
Owner Sam Read explains, “Earlier in the year, their father passed away in his 90s leaving them one last inheritance that he had described as a safety deposit box with gold’. To my surprise, there was gold jewelry and two unstamped gold bars worth over $20k as well as thousands of dollars in gold coins, and gold pocket watches.”
As it turns out, the father had once owned a jewelry store in Carson City back in the 60s. Most of the jewelry had been sold off when he closed down. But he’d left a little stashed away.
A huge flipping surprise
“After spending a couple of hours going through the items, coming up with a value,” Read explains, “we played the ‘honest man’s flip game’.
Without seeing each other’s response, we each wrote down what the expected outcome of the transaction would be onto slips of paper. Then we agreed to flip over the written responses at the same time.
“They flipped over $17,000. Imagine their reaction when I flipped over $75,000,” he recalls.
The couple was understandably ecstatic and so surprised with the windfall that they didn’t immediately know what they’d even do with the money. Some weeks went by, and when they returned to Read’s pawnshop to finish a few other deals, he learned that they put most of the funds into a college trust fund for their grandchildren.
