Standing the test of time: One pawnbroker’s watch collection

Time waits for no man. But an iconic timepiece can stop anyone in their tracks. From the craftsmanship to the item’s rarity or even the story of acquiring it, a classic watch tells more than time—it tells the world who you are.

Jerry Whitehead, a second-generation pawnbroker who spends his time traveling to pawnshops all over, has developed a passion for quality timepieces during the forty-plus years he’s spent in the industry.

About his collection, Jerry says, “I trade these around quite frequently and buy and sell often with a range of friends, clients, and dealers around the world today.”

Here’s a look at just some of the pieces in his watch collection, as well as his anecdotal information about each:

Rolex "Root Beer" Submariner

That piece is Rolex 18Kt Rose Gold “Root Beer” Submariner, one of my favs for sure. Acquired in Phnom Penh Cambodia of all places not too long ago.

Rolex Daytona Cosmograph

This piece is a Daytona Cosmograph Rose Gold as well, had have this one for a while, don’t’ recall where this one came from, but it’s a beauty none the less!

Another Patek Philippe watch, moon phase, also very rare. This came through one of my stores in South Florida way back when.

Bell & Ross Roulette Wheel Watch

This is a very unique watch, it’s a Bell & Ross very limited edition one of only 300 made. It’s a Roulette Wheel watch. I won this piece playing Roulette down in Aruba once upon a time.

Panerai Watch

No collection could be complete with a couple of Panerai’s. This is one of two that I have, this is the Luminor Regatta with rubber strap. Italian military watches, nice piece. I got both of the Panerai’s on consulting while in the Philippines some years back. Very nice pieces.

Panerai Watch II

This one has a bit more wear and tear on it, lots of HOG riding with this one!

Ernst & Benz

Ernst & Benz, big dial complex movement, this one came from Barbados while on client work long ago.

Baume & Mercier

The Baume & Mercier is a simple but elegant time piece. I believe I got this watch down in Turks N Caicos when we started the CashWiz project in the Caribbean many years ago. Great time piece, rarely worn!
