In pawn, having the proper security measures are critical to protect inventory and yield profitability, which is why having a competent security partner is necessary. As a licensed alarm technician, and someone who has conducted risk assessments for pawn shops and provided floor plan designs, Haley Glover fulfills this role.
Before working in pawn security, Haley taught ESL (English as a Second Language) and special education for early childhood through sixth grade. After the school district went through a series of changes, she decided she was ready for a change herself.
After meeting with a recruiter, Haley was asked how she would feel about the security business. “I won’t lie,” Haley said, “I’m nosy, so security seemed quite suitable for me.” Haley also loves crime shows, her favorite being “See No Evil,” where criminals are commonly found through CCTV footage. Over time, her interest in security has grown and has expressed that she would have gotten into the industry when she was younger if she’d know everything it involved
Haley began her new career as an administrative assistant, but her manager at the time instantly saw her potential by how she was able to answer technical questions and recommended she get licensed to sell. Haley jumped on the opportunity and became a Certified Alarm Technician from the ESA National Training School where she learned about alarm, access control and surveillance systems. She later went on to become a project manager and has also done project management for UL listed customers (UL681 and UL2050 for the Department of Defense).
Haley is now the senior security consultant and account manager at Sapphire Risk Advisory Group, a security firm in Dallas, Texas. Sapphire Risk’s expertise is implementing loss-prevention controls and processes to mitigate security threats from armed robbery and burglary for high-risk establishments, most notably independent pawn shops and cannabis dispensaries.
Her days at work are spent communicating with clients and vendors, doing paperwork for facility design, and project management on the build-out side of the facilities, which requires her to communicate with general contractors, architects, IT departments, clients, and integrators. As a licensed alarm technician, she typically guides clients on which particular equipment they need to have installed in order to make their facility cost-effective and operationally efficient.
Haley goes above and beyond to perform her job. She keeps her skills sharp by continually learning and studying the best way to design efficient security, as part of her learning disability requires her to read, write, and speak to remember something. Haley also remembers a time when she was working in the field installing alarms (often surprising people as a well-dressed woman) and went to a jeweler’s shop in Dallas. She was told there were beams on the roof. “I couldn’t find them in the zone list,” Haley said, “so I climbed the fire ladder…in heels…”
Of course, Haley knows to wear her boots, just like how she knows that to be a woman in a male-dominated industry, confidence is key. “Be confident with the knowledge that you already have and believe in yourself that you can do just as good of a job, if not better, than someone else,” Haley said. “I think diversity in any industry is crucial to success,” she also remarked, pleased that she has seen more women enter the industry in the past few years.
Haley plans to continue providing comfort and security for Sapphire Risk’s clients, and her go-getter, confident, and friendly attitude shows how women can succeed in any industry, or multiple ones all at once.
