From WGXA: A pawn investigator with the Bibb County Sheriff’s office says over the years, pawn shops have been helpful in getting stolen items off of the street.
State law requires that the shops submit a list of all of the items they take in daily and who brought them in.
The following day Sergeant William Gay checks the serial number for every item that arrived in each pawn shop across the county, to find out if any were reported stolen. If something it stolen, he calls the shop to put a hold on the item and the investigation begins.
Those regulations help give law enforcement a leg up in theft investigations.
“If there were no pawnshops, stolen items would going elsewhere… Drug houses, stuff like that,” Sergeant Gay said.
